RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT · BMJ, 2021
23 randomized trials. 1,357 adults.
Goldenberg and colleagues reviewed low- and very-low-carbohydrate diets in adults with type 2 diabetes. At six months, they found improvements in several outcomes, including blood-sugar control, weight and triglycerides.
Benefits generally diminished by 12 months, and longer-term evidence was limited. These findings do not mean low carb is best for everyone.

For some people, reducing carbohydrates can help with weight management and blood-sugar control. A 2021 BMJ review of adults with type 2 diabetes found improvements in weight, blood-glucose measures and triglycerides at six months compared with control diets. Benefits generally became smaller by 12 months. Food quality, portions and a plan you can sustain still matter.
